  2. Agreed. He is more gorgeous than a Michelangelo sculpture...but even if he gained weight, even when he gets older, he'll still be beautiful with the personality and intelligence he has. I don't want to idealize things too much, but the lady he ends up with will most likely have more than won the lottery.

  3. Sorry if this is a bit off-topic to the gorgeous picture of Henry with Tamina, but I've just read a thread from March 7th where some people were saying that, because WB were disappointed with MoS1, they abandoned their plans for MoS2 (and3) to be Supes-only films, and instead opted for the sequel to be BvsS ,followed by JL. Comments were made that this meant that Henry had been short-changed.
But surely all the "Easter eggs" about Wayne Ent and LexCorp in MoS1 are a clear sign that MoS2 was always going to include Batman (and Lex Luthor),and was never going to be just a Supes-only movie? So BvsS is the sequel to MoS1 which WB planned from the outset, and Henry will have known this when he signed up with WB.
I don't think he has been,or will be feeling, "short-changed".

  4. Early in 2013 the plans were for a Superman trilogy first then other films. You can search and find references. Henry said JL was way down the line. The plans were for a Superman trilogy and a JL trilogy. So Henry was optioned for 6 films. Now that they aren't doing more solo MOS films Henry is freed up some. This may be why he got UNCLE. Use some of the options they won't be using for more Superman. The standard is 3 solos and 3 teams. Cap, Ironman, Thor. Or just 3 solos in WB's case those being the Nolan Batman films. That Henry isn't getting that puts him out there with Brandon Routh and Ryan Reynolds. Both were going to be in trilogies until their first film disappointed as did MOS.

  5. A link. one of many, that talks about the details of the MOS trilogy. Released just before MOS came out. The thing that ended chances for a full-blown MOS franchise was the second week fall-off which was one of the worst in film history and the weekly fall-offs. MOS was in theatres just 3 months to the day almost. Thor 2 is still in theatres almost 4 months out. Hunger Games will be in theatres even longer. Not Henry's fault, he was saddled with a poorly crafted and executed film.

  6. But how do we know we'll NEVER get a solo Superman film again? I get that originally the plan was to do 3 solo Superman films and then 3 JL, but once they introduce JL, surely the other heroes will be getting their own spin-offs - or at least one or two? They're not gonna just introduce this whole new universe (for the first time ever) and not capitalise on it...? So my point is, how do we know we won't get a another solo Superman film AFTER JL?

    ReplyDelete
  7. The second week fall-off was exaggerated by the fact that the first weekend's box office was so stratospherically high. It seems that everyone who wanted to see the movie, wanted to do so the moment it came out, such was the interest.

And of course Henry would say, when asked, that JL was still some way off. He couldn't spoil the announcement that was going to be made at Comic-Con in July.

And why put in those Easter eggs about Bruce Wayne in MoS1, if Batman's appearance was still 3 movies away..........?

    1. Check out the falls for Avengers, TDKR and TASM. All had big openings. Two much larger than MOS. All had much smaller falls. It is what it is.

    2. MoS had the highest ever June weekend debut of any film in American cinema history. And Avengers, TDKR and TASM weren't truly origin stories--they already had a committed fanbase following.

  8. Yeah that's true ^

How can people say we won't get another Superman by himself movie later on though? Bcos all we know is that they have brought the Justice League movie forward - or have started introducing characters that will become the Justice League, at least - and that's happening sooner than we thought.

So we know they thought it would make sense to bring that forward to keep everyone's attention and create a hype - but once they have set up the Justice League, why WOULDNT they do another solo Superman film at some point later on and capitalise on it as much as possible? Cos we know that they're gonna do a solo Wonder Woman film, and probably Batman and whoever else is in the JL - so you think they're gonna be doing these solo films for the other heroes and just not Superman?? I can't see that happening...

It looks to me as though they have put more solo Superman films on the backburner for a while while they develop the JL, I don't think there's any evidence further solo films have been entirely shelved? Unless anyone knows otherwise...?

    1. Maybe Henry knows? Hope one of his fans asks him that. Of course he may be not allowed to talk about it. Right now Batman is getting solos and WW too. As far as I know there has been no mention of more Superman solos or solos for other JL characters. You'd think WB would have said yes there will be another Superman film. But they haven't. Do a google search. Nada.

  9. Rumor is Batman forms the JL which is not canon. Superman originally formed it. Batman has to be in each JL film. Superman doesn't. He'll be in the first one. I'd rather he not be in JL2 or 3 and instead get to be the star in UNCLE 2 and 3. Using his options that way. His payday will be the same as far as I know.

  10. There will eventually be another Superman film. For now though WB is intent on launching the Affleck Batman trilogy, a WW trilogy and, if rumors that Nightwing will be in JL, a Nightwing trilogy. Superman has had 2 shots in 7 years and didn't meet studio expectations. WB is looking to try other franchises which may be more lucrative than Superman. Makes perfect business sense.

Superman will get a solo again but it is likely 10 - 15 years off. The biggest Superman internet site claimed a while back that the less than expected BO and the critical reviews scared WB off on more Superman for the time being. That WB is afraid a solo MOS2 might do less than MOS did.

Its all about the bottom line - profit.

  11. Think about Henry Cavill's career guys! Is it better he be a co-star with 7 others in JL movies or a star on his own in 007 type movies? Henry is leading man caliber and he ain't gonna get that from wasting years of time making JL films. He's in his prime now and needs to make the right career move after this next film. Evans is leaving Cap its rumored for career reasons. Sorry, JL films where Henry gets maybe 20 minutes of screen time don't thrill me. I want 2 hours of screen time for him - call me selfish, I don't care.

    1. I rather see Henry Cavill in a box hit for 20 minutes then 90 minutes in a flop. I don't care about how small a role is if Mr. Cavill gives a stellar performance. Haven't you heard of the saying "There is no small roles, only small actors?" Mr. Cavill has the talent to shine in any role no matter how big it is.
Concerning Chris Evans, he has been part of 3 franchises (Fantastic Four, Captain America and Avengers) yet he is no where as popular as Henry Cavill. With the role of Superman, Henry Cavill has expanded his fan based to include males 18-49. Many movies studios target that group because they tend spend the most money in movies and merchandise such as toys and clothing.

  14. I think the plan is for Superman to be only in first JL film. Batman likely to be the only one in all 3. That opens up WB to turn Man From Uncle into a trilogy using remaining options.

    1. That is assuming The Man from U.N.C.L.E. does *really* well. As much as we believe in the film, and know Henry will be amazing as Solo, there's a better chance of him continuing on with the JL than as Solo. Just our view.

      Delete
    2. No one knows for sure. I'm going off what is said on comic book and movie boards. JL is meant to let WB introduce new characters in each film. Batman is the only character that has to be in all films. WW may not be in the second one especially if her own franchise hits big money. It sounds like it will be a rotating roster from film to film.

    3. I'll call rubbish on that rumor.

I sincerely doubt that WB/DC would do ANY Justice League movies that don't have Superman in them. Pop culture-wise, he's the grand-daddy of all Superheroes. Box Office-wise, he's their second-biggest star.

Superman and Batman were both original members of the Justice League, but NEITHER of them appeared in that many JL stories. And in today's WB/DCU, without either of them - not just one or the other - most movie-goers wouldn't bother to go see a JL movie. Hell, they probably wouldn't even count it as a JL movie without both of those characters in it.

As far as most of today's audiences are concerned, the JL needs Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. I'd be happy to see The Flash and The Green Lantern included but couldn't give a toss about Martian Manhunter.

  15. The problem I have with "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" is that it is a movie reboot of a tv show. Many of those kinds of movies don't do well at the box office. It is also opening in January, which is a bad month for movie release.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A. It worked for Mission Impossible
      and
      B. So far it's opening on the same day as Michael Mann's untitled thriller with Chris Hemsworth. Mann''s known for making great films, mostly - but not box office hits. And Hemsworth may have Thor and The Avengers to fall back on, but with guaranteed audiences for those - that doesn't mean he can open a movie anymore than Cavill.

Also opening the same day is, interestingly enough, Kaley Cuoco's The Wedding Ringer.

All three are listed as Wide Releases, which means it's doubtful that anyone will open any other WRs that weekend.

So far, I think I'll call Man from UNCLE the box office winner for that weekend. Opening in January so far looks like a very smart move.

      Delete
  16. Man from UNCLE has to have cost less than 20 million to make. All it needs is 40 million to break even. Anything more is profit. JL is a dead end for Mr. Cavill's career but WB may like him so much in UNCLE they offer him a bigger starring film after UNCLE.

    1. The estimate budget for Uncle was $75 million. (source IMDB) That estimate most likely doesn't include the cost of promoting the movie.

      Delete
    2. It has a budget of around $75 million. Add an average of $35 - $40 million for marketing and distribution costs and you'll need a lot more than $40 million to 'break even".

      Delete
    3. $75 million, by all reports.

Oh, if only movie-money was that simple as just making double their budgets.

Firstly, add approximately 50% of any movie's budget, to come up with their D&M costs. Which, if we go with the $75 million budget that its reported to have cost, takes it up for $112,500,000).

Then you have to take into account the cuts that the theaters get. Anywhere from 20% to 50% goes to the theater chains, that can go up to 80% after the first couple of weeks' run. It's only after 2 to 3 months of a cinema run that 100% of box office goes back to the Studios.

Hollywood accounting is a game unto itself. Even huge movies that seem to have massive profits aren't giving studios as much money as people think.

Man from U.N.C.L.E will need a lot more than $40 million. And studios don't generally make franchises out of movies that only break even.

  17. Exactly. Again, we have high hopes for the film but opening in January is a huge leap of faith/risk. Batman vs. Superman and Justice League are guaranteed hits no matter what. So while Batman will probably get his own film first, maybe after that Supes has enough of a boost to come back strong on his own. It would probably still involve Henry since he'd have films left to fulfill in his contract. But hey, we'll take more Solo if U.N.C.L.E. hits it big!

  18. Realistically, if WB makes another Superman solo, its more than a decade away. With a new actor given the length of time. WB, if it makes one superhero film every 2 years (big if) has JL in 2018. After JL their aim to launch a Batman and WW trilogies. Batman in 2020, WW in 2022, JL2 2024. 2026? Hope its Superman, but that's 12 years away. Henry will be 42. The role recast sadly.

    1. True, but that's assuming they go ahead with WW film. That could always change. There's still some wiggle room there..

      Delete
    2. WB first priority is to get JL up. Then Batman w/Affleck. WB assumes solo Batflecks can do a billion. Third is to get a successful female superhero franchise going. That would make WB the first studio to get a female superhero to make it big on the big screen. Its why rumored directors for her first solo are Whedon, Jackson and a few other A listers. I'm not sure WW can do a billion in her first film, but if Whedon does it with a phenom script who knows? WB clearly thinks WW has Batman or near Batman potential.

      Delete
    3. Whedon won't do it - he's a Marvel guy now. If they wouldn't let Jamie Alexander go for WW, they sure as heck won't let Whedon do a DC movie.

Also, they already rejected his WW script. And as much as I quite liked The Avengers, his pop-culture ridden jokiness isn't really the tone that WB and DC appear to want for the DCU. Thank goodness.

      Delete
  19. WB's slow pace is frustrating. Marvel has 6 films set between now and 2018. Fox has 5 super-hero films set by then. WB? 2. The studio does not see DC films as a priority. Rumor is WB is looking for young early to mid -20s actors for JL as the rollout of the JL trilogy could take a decade or more. DC fans that want to see GL or Aquaman are really up the creek since these won't be getting solo films for a long, long time.

    1. They'll have to let a little more breathing space between the last debacle that was a GL solo movie, before they attempt another one.

      Delete
    2. Yeah. Heard on Movie Talk a while back that WB's focus in getting Batman and WW trilogies up and running. GL, Superman and the rest are on hold for now. That's why don't be surprised if WW ends up with an equal role in Batman vs Superman as both Batman and Superman. I've heard spec that the name is being kept under wraps and will end up being Trinity.

  20. Anyone else wish Mr.Cavill has been cast in a Marvel superhero role instead of DC/WB? Hindsight is 20/20..

  21. Evans is talking of leaving after AV2 and Cap 3. Hemsworth is also hinting he may leave after Thor 3. It'd be awesome if Henry was recast into one of those roles! Go for it! Henry as Cap would be to die for.

    1. C'mon now, respect the suit lol.. -- honestly think Superman will be the only superhero he'll ever play. He's the most awesome one, why settle for less. Then again, never say never #Daredevil.. but Ben IS upgrading to Batman.

      Delete
    2. If they are leaving, it is most likely due to being underpay. Before the filming of Avengers II began, Hemsworth, Evans and Johansen were reported as being unsatisfied with their salary. Compare to Downey who was supposedly paid millions, everyone else was paid peanuts. Henry Cavill was also reported being paid a few millions plus a piece of Box Office for his role as Superman. So if both of those reports are true, I think it will downgrade both financially and status. Superman is more popular character globally.

      Delete
    3. Hemsworth just turned 30. The workouts needed to do Thor actually hurt the body as one gets past 30. That's why he may leave after next one. Evens wants to do mainstream films and move into a leading man role.

      Delete
  22. Oh please. Nobody's leaving after the "next" one.

Hemsworth and Evans both have 6-picture deals. As in signed contracts.

After 2 Cap movies, 2 Thors and 2 Avengers movies, they will each still have 2 movies left to go - 1 more solo outing, and 1 more Avengers.

And THEN they can leave and Marvel will have to reboot those characters if they want to keep Cap and Thor going.
